Yesterday Shakur Stevenson walked out on Zuffa Boxing without throwing a punch. Today the counter-narrative landed.

A source close to Zuffa told SunSport they offered Shakur a handful of fights and he turned them all down — he fights once a year, they want activity. The matchmaking never closed: Gary Antuanne Russell reportedly wanted $3 million, Zuffa wouldn’t pay; a Muratalla mandatory proved unfeasible; Stevenson accepted $15 million for Haney, then moved the goalposts higher (single-sourced), and says Dalton Smith could be next. Hearn, on iFL TV: “It was so embarrassing, so humiliating for Zuffa that I thought it couldn’t be real.” (The Sun; BoxingInsider; Boxing News 24; DAZN.)

Why it matters. Both stories can be true: a once-a-year fighter asking $15 million a fight, and a startup that couldn’t close Russell at $3 million or Valenzuela at $7 million. The money never met the machine.

Adam’s take. I’ve sat in that room. The marquee signing is the easiest press release in boxing and the hardest contract to honor — everybody announces the money, nobody announces the calendar. Shakur called it in 90 days: inactivity kills fighters faster than a loss. Zuffa lost its proof of concept before the first bell.
