Canelo’s Riyadh card has a safety problem money can’t fix (Oct 18) · BOXING

Robert Garcia — trainer of Lindolfo Delgado, who fights Artur Biyarslanov for the vacant IBF super lightweight title on the Oct 31 undercard — is the first person on the show to say it publicly: he fears for his team’s safety in Riyadh. “We’re going to the f***ing airport that’s being bombed,” Garcia told reporter Elie Seckbach. He expects Canelo to fly private with round-the-clock security while his own camp flies commercial through King Khalid International. (Boxing News 24, Oct 18.)

The context is ugly: a Houthi-claimed strike on the airport killed 12 and injured 309 per Saudi aviation authorities; the US Embassy raised its advisory to Level 3 (“reconsider travel”); Mexico issued its own airport advisory; and the Six Kings Slam tennis tournament was postponed two months. De La Hoya posted a video Oct 15 calling it “an enormous safety concern.” Turki Alalshikh’s response: “Canelo reached out and told me he’ll still fight in Riyadh this October, no matter what happens. He fears nothing.” (FightSports.tv; BoxingScene; MMA Mania.)

Why it matters. In boxing, whoever cancels first pays — that’s the clause doing the real work here. Neither side will blink because blinking costs the purse (insiders describe a $50M-plus figure — never confirmed, treat as leverage talk, not fact) and the rest of a multi-fight deal. So you get the dance: the promoter tweets defiance, the legend posts warnings, and the undercard trainer says the quiet part out loud — the money protects the headliner, not the show.

Adam’s take. I’ve canceled shows. Nobody wants to be the one who says it first, because the contract says the one who blinks eats the money. That’s why this is playing out as a staring contest instead of a decision — and it’s why Garcia’s the most honest voice in it. The Saudi model bought the biggest names in boxing. Money buys everything except the one thing this fight needs: a safe airport.

📰 Weekend Recap

The weekend that was — one line each, with the business read.

  • Dubois TKO2 Wardley. Daniel Dubois retained the WBO heavyweight title Saturday at the O2, stopping Fabio Wardley at 2:21 of round two — and Hrgovic climbed into the ring calling for unification. The rematch took six minutes; the first fight took eleven rounds. (Reuters)
  • Fundora’s buzzer-beater. Sebastian Fundora KO’d Ermal Hadribeaj at 2:59 of round 12 to keep the WBC 154 title — with a bell-rang-first controversy single-sourced to Alan Dawson. A tainted finish complicates the undisputed road. (MMA Mania; Dawson)
  • Edmonton’s record night. Mike Malott’s knee KO’d Joaquin Buckley; 12 finishes on 13 fights tied the UFC single-card record; Jasmine Jasudavicius upset Erin Blanchfield. No marquee names, record output — the Paramount-era thesis, working. (MMA Junkie)
  • Figueroa’s lost weekend. Missed weight by 1.4 lbs, stripped of the WBA featherweight title on the scales, then the Kameda fight was pulled entirely — illness, per PBC (single-sourced). He didn’t just lose a fight; he incinerated his only leverage for an Inoue payday. (Reuters; FIGHTMAG)
  • BKFC’s strange Saturday. Jamel Herring beat John Dodson unanimous at BKFC 95 — and president David Feldman said he was “disgusted” by his own main event, a day after killing the 125-lb division without telling Dodson. Executioner and critic in the same week. (MiddleEasy)
  • Strickland’s leverage play — with a correction. Strickland floated vacating and “speed-running” his contract to chase Jake Paul; White: “There’s absolutely no issues with his contract. He just signed his contract in May.” The correction: MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn reports the viral $400K figure was invented by a random X account — Strickland’s new six-fight deal pays $1M+ per fight. It’s a positioning play, not a pay gap. (BJPenn; NYFights)
  • PFL Chicago. Juliana Velasquez Bishop dethroned Liz Carmouche for the inaugural women’s flyweight title; Dakota Ditcheva squared off with Bishop in the cage. PFL’s homegrown star trajectory finally has a face.

📊 The Full Card

Shakur vs. Haney is dead — killed by two pounds and a lawyer’s email (Oct 16) · BOXING

  • The camps had verbally agreed 145 lbs for Nov 28 in Atlanta — then it collapsed in public. Stevenson says Haney’s lawyer emailed at the “11th hour” demanding 147 (“big waste of everybody’s time”); Haney says Stevenson went missing for days and tried to slap a rehydration clause on him after six months of talks. Stevenson holds the WBO 140 title; Haney holds WBO 147. Dan Rafael reports Zuffa Boxing is already planning Stevenson for Jan 23 in Newark instead. (CombatSportsUK; SI; Bad Left Hook.)
  • The business read: Watch the subtext, not the weight. Haney is exclusive to DAZN; Stevenson signed a multi-fight Zuffa Boxing deal in July. Zuffa-vs-DAZN exclusivity is becoming a fight-killer — the promoters can’t make fights their contracts won’t allow. “Agreed in principle” isn’t a term sheet.

Basharat fires back at White — the 16-0 cut gets ugly (Oct 18) · MMA

  • Farid Basharat (16-0, 7-0 UFC, the division’s longest active win streak) fought out his contract in July and was never offered a new one. After White vaguely suggested “reasons beyond results” at the UFC Edmonton presser, Basharat posted receipts: fought with a torn MCL on Contender Series, fought an opponent who missed by 10 lbs in Abu Dhabi, “never said no to nobody.” His brother Javid: “We patiently waited 3 months and we found out when everyone else found out!” Muhammad Mokaev — the last undefeated cut — chimed in blaming “Paramount and TKO.” (MMA Junkie; Sherdog.)
  • The business read: The clearest signal yet of Paramount-era roster economics: winning without finishes doesn’t pay. Undefeated is not untouchable — merit lost to matchmaker politics, and the Mokaev pattern is repeating. Flag: the White–Basharat exchange is a genuinely new development, not a repeat.

Benavidez is about to become the biggest free agent in boxing (Oct 18) · BOXING

  • David Benavidez told Brian Custer his Dec 5 fight against Michal Cieslak (WBC cruiserweight, Phoenix) is the last on his Sampson Lewkowicz contract — then free agency at 32-0 with belts in two divisions. His stated roadmap: Opetaia on Cinco de Mayo 2027, Beterbiev at cruiserweight, then Usyk. (Boxing News 24; The Ring.)
  • The business read: Forget the wishlist — the real story is a two-division champion hitting the open market. PBC, Zuffa Boxing, and MVP all have reasons to bid, and the first number leaked will set the 2027 market.

Fundora’s camp draws a hard 50-50 line on Ennis — undisputed could die before talks start (Oct 18) · BOXING

  • After the buzzer-beater KO, promoter Sampson Lewkowicz said on the broadcast that Fundora–Ennis happens at 50-50 or not at all: “It doesn’t make any difference because we need each other.” Fundora holds the WBC strap; Ennis holds WBA + WBO and fights Josh Kelly for the IBF. Fundora himself struck a softer tone (“there’s going to be some sacrifices from both sides”). (BoxingNews24; Boxing247.)
  • The business read: The classic leverage trap — the holder of the final missing belt is demanding parity with a three-belt A-side. If Ennis beats Kelly, this demand is the single biggest obstacle to the first undisputed 154-lb champion. Flag: follow-up to the weekend KO item — genuinely new (the 50-50 demand).

ONE’s Tokyo night: two title defenses, $200K in bonuses, Takeru’s Hall of Fame sendoff (Oct 17) · BUSINESS

  • ONE Samurai 4 at Ariake Arena, and US media slept through it: Jonathan Haggerty TKO’d Hiroki Akimoto in round three to retain the bantamweight kickboxing crown; Nadaka Yoshinari head-kick KO’d Rifdean Masdor in round two to keep the atomweight Muay Thai title — Chatri handed both $100K performance bonuses. Takeru got a retirement ceremony and a ONE Hall of Fame induction. (Combat Press; ONE FC.)
  • The business read: ONE is quietly building a standalone Japanese event brand at Ariake — and $200K in discretionary bonuses is Chatri spending like the PPV era never ended.

💬 The Chatter

What the fight world is talking about — no take required, just the room.

  • Figueroa fallout, part two. Tomoki Kameda says he has “agreed with the promoter and the WBA” that he gets priority for the next WBA featherweight championship decider — and Helwani’s Inside Boxing floated Naoya Inoue (who tweeted Oct 13 he’s done waiting on Bam Rodriguez) for the vacant belt. The Inoue lane may bypass Figueroa entirely. (GeoSuper; Helwani Show, Oct 18 — flag: genuinely new development on the weekend saga.)
  • UFC’s international rights harvest. MiddleEasy reports a UFC ESPN-on-Disney+ deal in the Philippines — terms and years undisclosed, and it doesn’t touch the US Paramount deal. Same week: RMC Sport extended its French UFC deal and added Zuffa Boxing + UFC BJJ rights. TKO is stacking international rights on top of the $7.7B US deal. (MiddleEasy, Oct 19 — flag: single-sourced.)
  • BJJ’s pay scale gets clearer. The IBJJF Crown (Nov 8, Long Beach) confirmed its final invites: Rerisson Gabriel joins featherweight, three-time champ Erich Munis returns for a fourth straight ultra-heavyweight bid, Gabi Pessanha defends women’s super-heavyweight, Sarah Galvão defends lightweight at a new weight class. Six brackets, eight each — $20,000 to every winner. (MiddleEasy)

💰 Who Got Paid

Chatri’s $200,000 Friday night. After ONE Samurai 4 in Tokyo, ONE chairman Chatri Sityodtong handed Jonathan Haggerty and Nadaka Yoshinari $100,000 performance bonuses apiece — $200K in discretionary bonuses, the biggest single-night bonus spend in kickboxing this year. (Combat Press; ONE FC.)

📈 Markets

FRIDAY, OCT 16 CLOSES (MARKETS SHUT SUNDAY)

NFLX  $70.53  -2.87% Fri — the day’s biggest loser, one day before Tuesday’s Q3 earnings. The fight tie: the company carrying Fury-Joshua in eight weeks led the slide.

DKNG  $18.90  -2.12% Fri — back near the fresh 52-week low — the betting sector’s sale continues.

FLUT  $75.60  -0.76% Fri — a quieter slide; the ~65% YTD drawdown stays the story.

TKO  $175.50  -0.30% Fri — barely red; roughly 19% off where it started the year.

PREDICTION MARKETS — Polymarket

UFC 333: Dvalishvili vs. Yan 3 $55k vol

Yan 59.5%

Dvalishvili 40.5%

The co-main is the betting board’s most competitive UFC 333 market — the main event’s -110/-110 sits in the fight sheet above.

A new UFC P4P #1 in 2026 $567k vol

No change at #1 99.35%

Yes, a new #1 0.65%

The read: The fight-adjacent sector spent the week bleeding and Friday closed it out — Netflix slides into earnings tomorrow carrying both the Tyson doc and Fury-Joshua, and the betting names keep trading like distressed inventory. One red week doesn’t make a trend, but five red closes in a row would.

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles... The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena.”

— Theodore Roosevelt, The Man in the Arena (1910)
