🥊 The Main Event

Dubois demolishes Wardley in two — and ends the trilogy question (Oct 17) · BOXING

Daniel Dubois retained his WBO heavyweight title Saturday night at London’s O2 Arena, stopping Fabio Wardley at 2:21 of round two — trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel after Dubois floored Wardley within 17 seconds of the opening bell and never let up. Five months after their 11-round war in Manchester, the rematch took six minutes. (Reuters; Boxing Week.)

IBF champion Filip Hrgovic climbed into the ring afterward and called for a unification. And the -370 favorite cashed: the sentiment flip from May — when Wardley was the slight favorite — played out exactly as the market said it would. (Geosuper TV/Reuters.)

Why it matters. Last night was boxing’s live A/B test: DAZN ran the UK’s biggest domestic rematch on PPV while PBC ran two title fights free on TNT/truTV/DAZN in Vegas. And the division is re-sorting into a pecking order — Dubois, Hrgovic circling, and the Fury-Joshua winner in Cardiff on Dec 11. One decisive result moved the heavyweight map more than any press-conference war has all year. Flag: follow-up to yesterday’s weigh-in item — genuinely new (result).

Adam’s take. Wardley activated a rematch clause to prove the first fight was a fluke. It wasn’t. Rematch clauses are supposed to protect losers — this one cost Wardley five months and proved nothing except that the gap was real. The promoter lesson: one decisive result is worth more than two paydays when the second payday ends the myth.

📊 The Full Card

Fundora’s buzzer-beater KO — one second left, and a controversy (Oct 17) · BOXING

  • Sebastian Fundora defended his WBC super welterweight title at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, knocking out unbeaten Ermal Hadribeaj at 2:59 of round 12 — the final second. Hadribeaj was docked two points (rounds 3 and 11) and loses for the first time. Fundora: “We want [to be the] undisputed [champion].” (MMA Mania; DAZN.)
  • The business read: The catch: Alan Dawson reports the final bell had already rung before the KO punch landed — referee Thomas Taylor counted it anyway. Controversy is free marketing, but a tainted finish complicates the undisputed roadmap against the Boots Ennis-Josh Kelly winner. PBC’s free-TV experiment got its loudest ending yet — and the co-feature told the undercard story: Armando Resendiz, elevated when Figueroa-Kameda collapsed, beat Koen Mazoudier by unanimous decision (98-92, 97-93, 97-93). (Bleacher Report; DAZN.) Flag: bell controversy single-sourced to Dawson/Uncrowned.

Malott’s knee levels Buckley — and Edmonton ties a UFC record (Oct 17) · MMA

  • Mike Malott knocked out Joaquin Buckley at 2:32 of round two in Edmonton — a head kick whose knee caught flush on the jaw. Malott (15-2-1) extends his win streak to five. In the co-main, Jasmine Jasudavicius upset Erin Blanchfield by unanimous decision (29-28 x3). Thirteen fights, twelve finishes — tying the single-card UFC record. (MMA Junkie; MMA Mania.)
  • The business read: The Paramount-era thesis working: no marquee names, record output. Malott is the Canadian torchbearer the machine needed, and Buckley’s third straight loss drops a former six-fight-win-streak star out of the picture. Jasudavicius just made herself the night’s second-biggest story.

Strickland wants to vacate and “speed run” his contract to fight Jake Paul (Oct 17) · MMA

  • Middleweight champion Sean Strickland floated it online: unless things change with the UFC he’s “kinda over it” — contemplating vacating the belt, moving to 205, and knocking out his contract to chase a Jake Paul payday (“McGregor makes 30 million to fight for 30 seconds”). Dana White, asked after UFC Edmonton: “There’s absolutely no issues with his contract. He just signed his contract in May.” (BJPenn, via Jed Goodman.)
  • The business read: Jake Paul is now the UFC middleweight champion’s leverage play. That sentence would have been absurd two years ago; today it’s a contract-negotiation tactic from a reigning champ. Whether it’s real or posturing, it tells you exactly where the money gravity sits. Flag: Strickland’s quotes from his own social posts, unverified beyond reporting.

Feldman is “disgusted” by his own main event — Herring beats Dodson (Oct 17) · BARE-KNUCKLE

  • Jamel Herring retained his BKFC bantamweight title over John Dodson at BKFC 95 in Newark — 48-47, 49-46, 49-46 across the cards. At the post-event presser, BKFC president David Feldman said he was “very disgusted by that main event” and demanded more punches. Attendance: 8,392. Interim flyweight Andrew Strode was named next challenger at 135. (MiddleEasy; Fightbook MMA.)
  • The business read: Feldman is the division’s executioner and its critic in the same week — he dissolved the 125-lb class Friday, then trashed Saturday’s main event. And the champ-champ consolation prize he promised Dodson died with the scorecards: Dodson’s loss closed the book on the dissolved division. Flag: BKFC’s official recap calls it a split in the narrative but labels it unanimous in its results table.

Derek Brunson goes bare-knuckle — debuts in Myrtle Beach Nov 20 (Oct 17) · BARE-KNUCKLE

  • Derek Brunson and BKFC announced it jointly on Instagram: the former top-5 UFC middleweight (21 UFC fights, one PFL bout since) debuts Nov 20 in Myrtle Beach, opponent TBA. No BKFC official press release yet — the announcement lives on social. (MiddleEasy; MMA Sucka.)
  • The business read: The veteran-harvest pipeline is now official strategy. Brunson’s wrestling won’t transfer to five two-minute rounds — but his name is the product, not his takedowns. Regional bare-knuckle promotions are paying real money for faded UFC names, and the names keep saying yes. Flag: single announcement (joint IG post); no opponent, no official release yet.

💬 The Chatter

What the fight world is talking about — no take required, just the room.

  • Figueroa vs. Kameda is OFF. Brandon Figueroa fell ill overnight and PBC pulled the fight entirely — Tomoki Kameda’s championship opportunity evaporates with it, a day after Figueroa was stripped of the WBA belt on the scales. (FIGHTMAG via Powcast — flag: PBC announcement, awaiting wider confirmation.)
  • Matchroom locks in its future. George Liddard and Giorgio Visioli signed long-term contract extensions with Matchroom after defending British & Commonwealth and English titles at the Copper Box. Eddie Hearn keeps his two brightest domestic prospects in-house. (FightNews, Oct 17)
  • BKB lands Aspen Ladd. BKB Bare Knuckle Boxing signed former UFC title contender Aspen Ladd to a multi-fight deal — she arrives after stints in the UFC, Bellator, PFL and Invicta. The Trigon league keeps stacking credible women’s talent. (FightNews, Oct 16)

📈 Markets

FRIDAY, OCT 16 CLOSES (MARKETS SHUT SUNDAY)

NFLX  $70.53  -2.86% Fri — the day’s biggest loser, three days before Tuesday’s Q3 earnings. The fight tie: the company carrying Fury-Joshua in eight weeks led the slide.

DKNG  $18.90  -2.12% Fri — back near the fresh 52-week low — the betting sector’s sale continues.

FLUT  $75.60  -0.76% Fri — a quieter slide; the ~65% YTD drawdown stays the story.

TKO  $175.50  -0.30% Fri — barely red; roughly 19% off where it started the year.

PREDICTION MARKETS — Polymarket

UFC Pound-For-Pound #1, end of 2026 $691k vol

Makhachev 94.5%

Anyone else 5.5%

UFC Featherweight champion, end of 2026 $323k vol

Evloev 49%

Volkanovski 48.5%

Two separate Yes-markets — the board reads Saturday’s Abu Dhabi main event as the title race, split almost dead even.

The read: The fight-adjacent sector spent the week bleeding and Friday closed it out — Netflix slides into earnings Tuesday carrying both the Tyson doc and Fury-Joshua, and the betting names keep trading like distressed inventory. One red week doesn’t make a trend, but five red closes in a row would.

“It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

— Rocky Balboa, Rocky VI
